2005 Futures Game

With the 2005 Futures Game being played Sunday, we have a great opportunity to take a look at some of the future stars of this game. We are going to provide a quick look at each player on the rosters and hopefully it will help everyone with their prospect lists in their keeper leagues.

Carmona does not have the strikeout rate you would like to see in a top prospect and his command rate has actually declined as he has moved up through the minors. While he has increased his velocity with age, he needs to improve his slider to improve his strikeout rate. When he learns that, he will be ready for the majors.

Liriano has displayed a very strong strikeout rate combined with an improving command rate which bodes very well for his future prospects. If he can continue this growth at AAA through the rest of 2005 he should get a shot at the big league rotation in the spring.

Loewen has a fantastic breaking ball but suffers from consistentency in his mechanics. He currently leads the Carolina league in walks and wild pitches. If he can harness his control he could make an impact at the major league level, but that has been said of many pitching prospects.

Scott Mathieson	RHP	21	PHI	A+	1	0	77	3.39	1.20
Mathieson has grown into his frame and now showcases a 96 mph fastball that he is blowing by minor league hitters. He needs to refine his curveball if he hopes to be a major league starter. If he cannot, the Phillies will find a place in the bullpen for his heater. Mathieson is still a couple seasons away, but he is just a notch behind Hamels and Floyd in potential.

This kid is pure power. He effortlessly throws 96 mph and has been clocked as high as 104. He compliments the heater with a hard slider. He has no off speed pitch that he can rely on but is supposed to be fixing that this season. If he cannot find a curveball or changeup to add to his mix, he will find himself in the Rockies bullpen by mid 2007.

Nieve is another hard thrower on this list. He sports a 2-seam, 4-seam, and cut fastball. He compliments his heat with a curveball and slider, though he is inconsistent with each. Like Morillo, Nieve must learn to trust and appreciate his offspeed pitches to be a successfull major league starter.

Yusmeiro Petit	RHP	20	NYM	AA	3	0	75	2.97	1.02
Petit is perhaps my favorite National League pitching prospect. He has an excellent mix of pitches from his deceptive fastball to his solid slider and and changeup. He threw alot of innings in winter ball which is why his average IP per start is so low. Its nice to see the club protecting his arm.

Anibal Sanchez	RHP	21	BOS	A+	6	0	95	2.40	0.98
Sanchez completely dominated hitters in the New York - Penn League in 2004 and has continued to do so this year, his first full season pro experience. He has an excellent mix of pitches and needs nothing but innings of experience to be ready for the Show. He could be in the Boston rotation in 2007.

Valdez is really a two-pitch pitcher. He loves the fastball and slider but doesn�t trust his changeup. He continues to start in the minors but he really projects as a set up man with closer potential. If he embraces this role he will have a very strong career in a major league bullpen.
