Who would you rather have on your team? Michael Bourn or Willy Tavares? Since Colorado recently signed Podsednik do you think Tavares will steal less?

hard for me to make a distinction. we've seen more from taveras - but my gut says bourn - but i can't explain why.

I'd take Bourn. He has more job security than Taveras, and the Astros have shown that he will have the green light whenever he wants. 50 steals is a very good possibility, given that he was able to get on base at a .378 clip in the minors.

Gomez also has a job locked up, but he is much younger, so I doubt he will be able to have the plate discipline to get on base enough to steal 30+. (plus he only had a .339 OBP in the minors) He will have a few more HR and RBI than Bourn, but not enough to be more valuable than Bourn's bunches of runs and SB, in my opinion.

i'd take gomez and do it fast. for me the difference in on-base isn't really enough to change the fact that the guy is just ridiculously fast. he just got #5 and it's only been a week, i think he's going past 30 no matter what his OBP is.

i had gomez in my deep keeper, traded him to a mets fan in a moment of weakness. would regret it pretty bad now if i hadn't lucked into fukudome with the draft pick i got for him. i think he's more legit than people think (gomez), speed aside. his raw AA hitting line from 06 looks bad, but if you look at the splits he really came on in the second half.

i'm not sure if you really want him leading off for your real team at this point, but in fantasy take the steals and be happy.

Past the SB's do you see much value in Gomez?

i should clarify my earlier remarks: bourn vs. gomez is pretty close, and i think could go either way. i think both will steal enough to make you happy, basically.

as far as gomez value beyond the SBs... he'll score enough runs to be useful there. probably not a lot else. he could take an unexpected step forward and help out in average, but something in the .260-.270 range is probably most likely. he might hit for power in the long run, but hasn't done it yet so i wouldn't expect much help there for the time being either.

so that's my read : he's strictly a steals robot for this year, but i do think he'll play well enough to stay in the lineup and run, which makes him a threat to get 50-60 bags.

as an aside, i don't get these mainstream analysts talking about how he "could steal 30". doesn't make sense to me - as i see it, he'll either steal 60 or be in the minors by june. the guy is jose-reyes fast. i mean i guess he could steal 30 by august, but be hitting .217 and get sent down then, and so technically would then have stolen 30. but i don't think that's what they mean.
