Anyone familiar with Scoresheet baseball? This past season was my first in scoresheet, but I have played budget baseball a few years back. When I drafted my team last year I had Clemens, Oswalt, Millwood, Lawrence, Benson, Gagne, C-Phillips, 1B-Klesko, 2B-Durham, 3B-Wigginton, SS-Cintron, OF's-Redman, Podsednik, Patterson. I wanted to play Kardnal baseball (for those of you who know what Cardnal baseball is) where great pitching, tough defense and scrappy basestealing wins ballgames. Needless to say that is the exact opposite of what wins scoresheet ballgames. Since last years draft, my psychology of scoresheet has changed, with the emphasis not on starting pitching but on hitting and relief pitching. Now, in scoresheet, teams play actual simulated games, at-bat by at-bat, based on how your players played that week in real MLB, I am in a 12 team league with 3 friends and 8 locals. No 2 teams have the same player, there is no point system. I have found it difficult to find information comparing players based on scoresheet games rather than a points style system. For instance, Podsednik was great if you had him in a points system, but in scoresheet you would be better to have a leadoff man with say 20 SB and a 30 point higher avg. (.275) like Redman.
Just looking for any info available. With my next post I'll leave my roster for my 2005 team.

Would it be possible to re-post this topic in the "Fantasy Talk" portion of the forum?

We do not provide any articles regarding scoresheet as rotochamp2 and myself have never played that form of Fantasy baseball.

I would love to get a forum area going specifically focusing on this game format if there are enough interested members.

I know there are at least two active members right now, and at least three more who use the info on this web site for scoresheet purposes. I would love to be part of getting together a scoresheet forum.

Im a huge fan of scoresheet. I mainly stay with the AL however with 4 teams. I have found the exact opposite however on what wins games in scoresheet. Great Pitching, and great defense is what I found wins games. However, it could be on how we are setting our lineups, or that the NL has so many good pitchers that it cancels each other out, where in the AL there are not as many top pitchers. I would love to look over your lineup, maybe we all can help eachother out. Did you like the new feature of watching the games play online? You dont know how much easier that made it then reading the old letters they sent out.

yes, I found it much funner, than just reading the game results.
I think mabye my hitting was just way too weak to ever have any success straight out of the draft.

I am on the three year plan, I will get better this year, but watch out next year. My pitchers just arent going to get it done for me yet I dont think.
Millwood
H. Ramirez
Lowry
Trachsel
R. Ortiz

VanBenshcoten
Fossum
Hendrickson

Alot of potential, if they can put it together I will be fine.

Hey, if you have the top pick in the draft you could always pick Tim Hudson. Laughing

I lost 104 games. I have already traded the first pick though. I was dead last in my league. I have a vastly improved team this year though

To Roland 1. I've been playing Scorsheet for well over 10 years. I've only had two losing seasons and have been to my league's world serries four times. When it comes to hitting, almost any starter is worth more than a bench player. Don't look at batting average at all. OBP and SLG is what you need. I tend to look at it 60/40 in favor of OBP. On the pitching side the only things to concern yourself with is ERA and IP. Get two relievers with ERAs under 3.00 if you can. Last year my startes were Radke, Kenny Rogers, Thomson, Wakefield and Harden, the only short reliever I used very much was Foulke. I led the league in ERA at 3.88. Even though I don't look at BA at all I led the league in BA (.283) was 3rd in Slg (.461) and second in OBP (.351). I lost the championship serries. Don't worry about playing positions when filling out your draft sheet (if you do it by mail). Follow scoresheets advice and just put down the best player.

I noticed last year that people who walk alot and dont strike out seem to always be tough outs in scoresheet. They always seem to move a runner up or hit a sac fly. Goldswiper, do you think that you have to have great depth at starting pitching to win games? I am in the same league as Roland1 and we are both a little thin on starting pitching. What do you like as a hook number for your pitchers?

When pickinng pitching in Scoresheet. You need to look at innings and era. It's better to have a guy that will give you 7 innings with a 4.50 than a spot starter who is going to average 4 innings an outing and have an era of 3.50. In the bullpen you do need someone to close for you but you don't need a closer from a major league team. A lot of set up guys will have era's in the threes and they will pitch more than an inning every time out. They are better than a closer (from real life) with a comparable era because the closer will normally only pitch one inning or less every time out. The set up guys will normally pitch 1 or two innings. So you can take a set up man insert him as your closer, give him an earliest inning of 8, then all you need is someone to get you through the seventh and/or the sixth inning. My team will usually have 3 or 4 short relievers, try to get eras under 4. Then pile up with starting pitching. Put your five lowest era starters in the rotrations and make the rest Long relievers. Leave your 3-4 short relievers to be used from the sixth inning on. That way you don't wast that good era on games already out of reach. Give every starter a hook number of 4. Hook for closer is also 4. Use seven guys in the bullepen. two with an inning of 1 and a hood of 3.5 make them your last two guys in priority. The next two; innings of 4 and a hook of 3. Two of your short relievers with an inning of 6 and hook of 2.5. Then a closer with an inning of 8 and a hook of 2. If you have starters that can get to your shourt relievers (the 6th inning) you will have decent starters because if their major league managers are letting them get to the sixth they are propobly only giving up around 4 runs anyway. So if you can get an offence that can generate around 5 runs a game you will win more than you loose.
