I don't know how others feel but I think it' a crock. And here is why. I don't give a crap what the guy has done in the past. I feel the guy who is performing the best at his position all around for the season should be the one who is on the All Star Team. I checked the totals yesterday Pujols and Bagwell were ahead of Thome. I know some would say Pujols deserves it, but Bagwell also. You have got to be kidding me. If you look at the number right now Thome should be starting at 1st base. #1 he's better defensivly and is hitting better than all other 1st baseman in the NL. Thome is not the only player this year being screwed by the fans, but because I am a Philly Fan I used him as my example. My thought is the guy who is playing overall the best at his position deserves to play in the All Star game I don't care who it is, even if he only has one great year. Does anyone feel the same about another player being screwed.

I agree and I disagree. I think that voting needs to be reformed. Something like votes can only be cast at ballpark on certain days - say a 3 game homestand for each team. It would eliminate some of the ballot stuffing that goes on. As for Thome deserving it over Pujols or Bagwell, you can say that as a Philly fan, but an Astros fan would say Bags and a Cards fan Pujols, and a Brewers fan (are there any?) would say that you are all crazy and that Overbay is the best 1b rake in the league. Simple fact is that the fans get to choose who they want to see start and they get it pretty right. If Thome is the best 1b in the league, McKeon will reward him with the reserve role. That is the role of managers - to get the players having the best seasons and the fans start the players they want to see play.

But the fans don't always get it right. How many times in the past was a deserving player left off the team because someone like Cal Ripken or Tony Gwynn were voted in as a starter by the fans. I haven't looked at the voting lately but aren't Nomar and Jeter near the top for AL SS?

I completely agree that the voting ends up screwed every year. Yes Thome is far more deserving that Bagwell this season but Pujols will be there every year till he retires.

The problem is that the voting is designed to give the fans who they want, not who is deserving. Unfortunately THAT doesn't even work since half the guys sit out to heal injuries anyway.

The all-star game should move to a 1/3 fan vote, 1/3 writer vote, 1/3 Mangers vote type of system. That would help bring some perspective to the system.

I have seen college football/basketball polls. Writers and coaches are much bigger idiots than the fans.

Bad enough the fans voting upto 25 times per email address, most never get it right. Players should vote for players period. Maybe allow the resv squad to be voted on. A better team, provides a better chance of a better game. Winner take all $$$ should provide a better spark for the players.

I think players should vote.
