Here is my number one sleeper for 06. I dont know much about him, but it looks like he could get a shot to be in the rotation for San Diego.

Clay Hensley, remember the name, he could win your league for you.

Who do you guys have as sleeper picks for next season?

Tim Stauffer is another young guy who could be in the Padres rotation next year.

Are these sleepers guys that you predict being good next year or in a few years ... if it is a few years then Eric Hurley ... if it is next year Sergio Mitre, Yusmeiro Petit or Hanley Rameriz (If they are considered sleepers in your opinion -- Hanley may not but the others are IMO)

Im thinking about people that you would take in the middle to late rounds of a draft, thinking that you may get some decent production out of them.

I have read some people talk about Jorge Sosa, but he would be number one on my bust list. I dont think that ERA will hold up again this year.

Another sleeper- Luis Gonzalez- Rockies 2B

Pitchers - Jon Papelbon, Justin Verlander, Josh Johnson, Sergio Mitre
Hitters - Almost all of Marlins lineup could be (namely Josh Willingham and Dan Uggla), Josh Barfield (kind of), Ben Johnson, Brian Anderson, Ryan Shealy

That is all I have for now.

Wow, that's a pretty high claim considering you admittedly "don't know much about him." Perhaps you want to do some research and provide some proof as to WHY he should be considered a sleeper for 2006.

I obviously do not think that he is going to take over for Peavy as their ace or anything like that. What I meant was that he is one of those late round picks that contributes more than you expected, and pushes you to that fantasy championship.

The biggest reason that I like him is that he didnt give up a single hr in nearly 50 innings pitched. He will be pitching about half of his games in PETCO, which will do nothing but help him. He will obviously have an ERA much higher than the one he had last year, but to be around 4.00-4.15 is very attainable for him. He is still relatively young, being only 26, and doesnt have very many innings on his arm so far in his career. Other than his 2004 minor league numbers, he has never really given up any homeruns. He is the perfect pitcher for the Padres, and could turn into their new Brian Lawrence.

Doumit seems to be everyone's darling this year. I think he's pretty good, but there are 2 things that bother me:

1) AB's. If you're playing in a 2-catcher league, or NL-only (or even better -- both) this isn't as much of an issue, but teams don't usually hand 450-500 AB's to rookies, unless they're can't miss franchise guys like V-Mart, Mauer, etc. So give him a decent year and he'll still get smoked by the Variteks and Posada's.

2) Aside from hitting .345 in 165 AB's in AAA out of nowhere last year there's nothing in his career numbers that stand out to me. His achievements through the minors look like what a decent regular should be doing at his age. With that 20% K rate and moderate power I'd guess .240 ish with 12-15 HR's if he gets 400 AB's, which he won't.

My possible sleeper pick is Travis Bowyer of the Florida Marlins. They obtained him from the Twins in the Luis Castillo trade. He is 24 and listed as 6-3 200 pounds. Might be a bullpen guy that could possibly close games for them. He throws 100 MPH but he still needs to learn to control his slider and change up. He struck out 12 in 10.2 innings pitched in 2005. Rest of his numbers were not spectacular though. Think OPEC got him in our minor league draft right before I was about to swoop him up.

Keep an eye out for him. Detective

I'm Ya Pushaa...

Ok, we're piling on poor twjtiger a bit.

The ML stats are too small a sample to mean anything. I think we too often see a guy come up and have success early and it leads us to believe he's better than he is.

Rookie pitchers with at least decent stuff, like Hensley has, often do well at first. But as hitters adjust and major league scouts get a better look they usually struggle. It's at that point when you find out if they really are good -- when they make their own "counter-adjustments."

Hensley made a breakthrough with his control last year in AAA and put up some terrific numbers (63 H, 71K, 22BB in 90 IP). He doesn't have great stuff, though, so he'll have to continue to improve his control -- he won't get away with walking 3.25/9IP again.

I like him as a 3rd or 4th starter or (more likely) a decent to good middle reliever. But I don't think it will happen this year.

Absolutely not Mitre -- he doesn't belong in the majors. He's another example of a guy who comes up, has success and everyone thinks he's the next Pedro, until the hitters adjust and smoke him.

Mitre had one good 1/2 year at AAA in 2004, and he still had a 1.325 WHIP. He's been lit up at AAA and the majors since. More than a hit an inning and his K rates have dropped, if anything. Stay away.

Ramirez' star isn't as shiny as it was a few years ago. Probably because his attitude prevents him from learning. Florida is going to be pretty disappointed if they hand him the F/T ss job in 2005.

I think Petit has a chance to be good this year, but there's a chance he'll spend time in the minors If he wins a rotation spot don't expect a ton of wins to come on what should be a bad team.

I'm surprised that of all the young pitchers out there you picked Hurley. Not a guy I've seen on too many lists. Plus he's coming up in Texas which has one of the worst pitchers' parks and no success at developing pitchers -- but I'm interested in hearing why you like him. Cool
