NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Yankees grabbed center fielder Johnny Damon away from the rival Boston Red Sox, reaching a preliminary agreement Tuesday night on a $52 million, four-year contract.

Details of the deal were still being negotiated and Damon must pass a physical, a baseball official said on condition of anonymity because negotiations were not yet final.

An early X-Mas present. I am so happy we did not get stuck with Damon and that horrible contract.

Get the clippers out. Torre wants everyone clean shaven with short hair.

Ya right now the BoSox are left without a lead-off man. I dont think they have anyone in the minors that could be called up for this duty (in general its always a bad idea for a rookie to lead-off). What would they give up for Coco? I presume it would be Clement or another pitcher. Still i think they're better off then with Damon's huge deal.

The boss is the one who makes everyone shave, not Torre. But hey why not blame it on Torre like everything else that goes wrong with the 200 million dollar team. Not like the owner and general manager are to blame. Sorry that got a little off tangent... Smile

Indeed a traitor.

13million seems awfully high for a player who is about to be past his prime. Would have liked the sox to keep him for 10 million maximum.

Maybe the surplus of 3B can be used now to trade for center fielder leadoff possibly.....

I see the Sox trading either a pitcher or a 3B for a CF to use over the next 2-3 years (Crisp or Reed). After that span, the Sox will have a couple of minor leaguers to choose from to take over the job depending on their progress. (David Murphy, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jeffrey Corsaletti)

It sucks but I know who I want in the Red Sox outfield now(and I think he would come at a cheap price too): Joey Gathright

The Sox are desperate for speed and he would fill that role instantly, I understand he's not a proven player but I think this is going to be a rebuilding kind of season, might as well bring in someone young, cheap, and take a chance, the worst thing that happens is he tanks this year and next year there's a bunch of center fielders out there in the free agent market, I dont know where you guys think the Sox should go but thats just my thoughts

I am really not sure this is going to be a rebuilding season. Even now the Red Sox could win the World Series if they play their cards right. They have the best starting rotation in a while (yes I think it is better than '04) and a good bullpen which is a rarity. If the Sox can get a CF (Gathright would be fine, but Crisp would be better) they could go a long way. I don't understand why the Sox wouldn't just play Graffanino at 2B and Loretta at SS. Loretta has the skills to be an excellent SS.

The lineup is still very good:

1-???(CF)
2-Mark Loretta (2B/SS)
3-David Ortiz (DH)
4-Manny Ramirez (LF)
5-Mike Lowell (3B)
6-Jason Varitek (C)
7-Trot Nixon (RF)
8-Kevin Youkilis/(Adrian Gonzalez?)(1B)
9-Tony Graffanino/Alex Cora/Dustin Pedroia (SS)

And the pitching staff isn't exactly too shabby either. If the Sox trade Wells to San Diego for someone (Roberts?) and trade Arroyo, then the pitching staff would be:

1)Curt Schilling
2)Josh Beckett
3)Matt Clement
4)Tim Wakefield
5)Jon Papelbon

And the pen would be respectable.

Well, I think Adrian Gonzalez will be in SD.
How do the Yankees keep doing this? I am a Braves' fan but I also have alot of respect for the Red Sox. This just shows how much respect for the rivalry the Red Sox players have. I know it kills the fans when something like this happens. Ruth, Clemens, and now Damon. I must say it is pretty funny though, with that 200 million dollar salary and they have a hard time winning their division.

The Yankees are honestly a pathetic franchise. They pay 70% more than anyone else in the league, yet they had 0% more wins than the teams they are outspending. It has been clear for about 5 years now. The reason that the Yankees won in the late 90's is that they were actually a team. Since then they have been spending more on players that aren't worth the prices they are being paid. Roll Eyes
